SI Thailand joined many other clubs in Thailand On the 5th of March, to celebrate 'Int Womens Day'.
With three tables filled with our SI members, we helped celebrate The 100th Anniversary of International Women's Day "EQUAL RIGHTS, EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES: PROGRESS FOR ALL" Forum
Keynote speaker was Dr Jean D'Cunha [Regional Programme Director, UNIFEM]
The Forum on :EQUAL RIGHTS EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES: PROFRESS FOR ALL", showed us how the Women of Thailand in Key positions are very aware of the CEDAW agreement, and other Bilenium Goals are accepted in Thailand.
SI President Kathy Barnett reports:
In March 2009 SI Dusit had a table of 10 members, except for the out-going President Jill Whitelaw, who joined us from from the Australian- New Zealand Women's Group (ANZWG).
The guest speaker Her Exellency the Ambassador from Israel, gave us a talk about Women's rights in the State of Israel.
Suprisingly they are not as strong as we would have thought. Although women are expected to play their role in the army, once they are married, life seems to want to keep them at home and away from any political persuasion. Women's equality has more growth to experience. We were all intrigued.
Most of the women's groups attending the lunch were Thai, and so we all sort of stuck out a little. In a way this was a positive thing as many of the other groups and organisations came along and after greeting us and making us feel very welcome, had their photo taken with some of us.
Major General Nongpanga Khomphairi, was one such lovely friendly woman (lady on the right in beautiful yellow). With her very good friend, from the same Zonta International group we held hands, crossed arms, and all smiled and laughed sharing in the unification of friendship. We loved this special Day.
